Sir Frank Berman KCMG QC

Sir Frank was Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2010 until 2020, and now serves as a member of the Board. He has been involved with the UCT Trust since 1999. Sir Frank is a British barrister and leading authority in international law.  He joined HM Diplomatic Service in 1965 and was Legal Adviser to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1991 to 1999.

Sir Frank graduated from UCT with a BA in 1959 and a BSc in 1960.   He attended Wadham College at Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar and undertook doctoral work at Nuffield College. He joined Essex Court Chambers in 2000, where he continues to practice law with a specialisation in international arbitration and advisory work in international law.   In 2006 he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Star of the Republic of Austria for his work as Chairman of the Claims Committee of the Austrian General Settlement Fund for Victims of Nazi Persecution.  In 2014 he was presented with the Grand Cross of the Royal Cambodian Order.  Since 2010 he has been a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and is Visiting Professor of International Law at Oxford and UCT.
