A Special UCT Opera Evening at the home of Sir Vernon and Lady Ellis

–    to raise funds for UCT’s Opera School

The programme will feature talented young South African singers, and will include well-loved Italian operatic arias and ensembles from Mozart through to Rossini and Verdi, as well as French Romantic arias and duets from Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers and Carmen, and Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette.

Completing the programme will be an African song composed by Makudupanyane Senaoana, and Gershwin’s “Summertime”.

Dr Lisa Engelbrecht, Head Vocal Coach at UCT Opera School, will accompany the singers:

Bongani Khubeka (bass baritone), an Operalia 2015 finalist and graduate of Dennis O’Neil’s academy in Cardiff, who is currently studying for a postgraduate diploma at UCT

Caroline Modiba (soprano), a member of the Cape Town Opera Studio, and graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music, who is now studying at the National Opera Centre

Makudupanyane Senaoana (tenor) who graduated from UCT in 2015 and is undertaking his Masters in Music at the Cologne Hochschüle für Musik und Tanz.

This evening will showcase the outstanding talent emerging from South Africa, and highlight the work UCT Opera School is doing to hone and nurture that talent.

All funds raised will help ensure a legacy for future generations in the study and performance of Opera in South Africa. We are deeply grateful to Sir Vernon and Lady Ellis who have once again opened their home to the UCT Opera School.

Our concert will be one of the last to be held at this very special venue, so be sure not to miss this opportunity.
