SHAWCO, the dynamic, innovative and passionate student-run NGO based at UCT, is constantly striving to improve the quality of life for individuals in impoverished communities around Cape Town.  SHAWCO has been running for 75 years and is one of South Africa’s (and Africa’s!) largest student volunteer organisations.

Now boasting over 2,000 volunteers drawn from UCT, it continues to engage with indigent communities in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces. SHAWCO runs programmes in both health and education, as well as through academic intervention units (Saturday school). In 2018, 1,300 children were tutored by SHAWCO education volunteers, 4,128 patients were attended to by health volunteers and 600 Saturday School learners were taught by educators on UCT upper campus.

Under SHAWCO’s Education Project, a donation of £50 can provide a place of safety for a young vulnerable child over the period of one year, enabling them to be able to play and study in an environment where they are supported both academically and emotionally.  A donation of £150 can enable a Grade 12 student to obtain tuition in preparation for final high school exams.

Celebrate your memories of SHAWCO by making a contribution to its life changing work.
