The University of Cape Town (UCT) ranks 269th out of nearly 20 000 universities worldwide according to the 2021–22 edition of the Global 2000 List by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

This places UCT first in South Africa and on the continent, and among the top 1.4% of universities globally. UCT’s position at 269th is just one spot lower than in the previous year. This year, the agency ranked 19 788 institutions.

The methodology that the CWUR uses to assess the performance of universities is based on four key pillars:

  • quality of education (25%)
  • alumni employment (25%)
  • quality of faculty (10%)
  • research performance, comprising research output (10%), high-quality publications (10%), influence (10%) and citations (10%).

During March, Times Higher Education (THE) ranked UCT among the top 10 of the world’s emerging economy universities – a repeat of the institution’s performance in the previous year.
