Professor Danwood Chirwa


Specialising in economic, social and cultural rights, children’s rights, international human rights law and comparative African constitutional and administrative law. He holds a PhD from the University of the Western Cape, an LLM from the University of Pretoria, and an LLB from the University of Malawi. From 2009 to 2014, he served as Head of the Department of Public Law. He has worked with a wide range of NGOs in Africa and beyond, including as a Director of the Open Democracy and Advice Centre (ODAC, 2006-2009), RAPCAN (a South African child rights and welfare NGO based in Cape Town), the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (a South African NGO focussing on socio-economic rights),  Rights and Democracy (Canada), Community Law Centre (South Africa), African Child Policy Forum (Ethiopia), ESCR-Net (USA based), Southern African Human Rights Trust (Zimbabwe). In 2007-8, he served as Secretary-General of the African Network of Constitutional Lawyers.  Chirwa has been  a contributing editor to the South African Journal of Criminal Justice (2006) and an editor of the ESR Review ( 2002 – 2009) and has also served on the editorial board of the Acta Juridica (2006),  Constitutional Court Review, City of Hong Kong University Law Review, the University of Ilorin Law Journal, South African Yearbook of International Law. He is also the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Malawi Law Journal.
